DSE Presents "Woman in Gold"
Trinity at 22nd
Philadelphia première of David Serkin Ludwig’s Woman in Gold for flute and string quartet, inspired by the story of Gustav Klimt’s painting Woman in Gold/Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, which was stolen from a Jewish family by the Nazis in World War II and appropriated by the Austrian government until it was restored to the rightful owners in 2006. This dramatic story is connected to David Serkin Ludwig’s own life, as his grandfather, the pianist Rudolf Serkin, studied with the composer Arnold Schoenberg, who was in Klimt’s artistic circle in Vienna. Schoenberg’s grandson, E. Randol Schoenberg, was the attorney who led the seven-year legal claim which successfully brought the painting back to Bloch-Bauer’s niece. Additional works by Mozart, Schoenberg, and Paul Ben-Haim. Mimi Stillman, flute
